Samena Newsletter #6
10/22/2010
Dear Friends,
I didn't get this note out before the Halloween Dance and Week #7's class. I am sending separate emails for Week 6 and 7 so that they don't end up being too long.
I want to talk briefly, once again, about missing classes. First, it is important to be at as many classes as possible. However, I do understand that trips have been planned, and family commitments have been made, and it is the time of year when colds and other illnesses are flying around. If you need to miss a class, come back as soon as you can. If possible come early and we can walk through the moves that you missed. Some moves will need the whole square so we will need to recruit helpers.
While you are gone, though, class will continue and we will be learning new moves every session. I review all the moves the following week. We just won't spend as much time as the previous week due to the fact that we need to save time for the new calls. The fortunate thing about dancing with the Samena Squares is that if we need to slow down and learn fewer calls each week we can.
The challenge with this is that when you go to Student Level Dances at other clubs you will run into calls that we have not had in class. No worries! Don't let it frustrate you or scare you! Just ask the caller to show it to you. You can then come back to class the following week and let me know what it was. I will add it to the teaching list for that night.
The key is to keep dancing!
Happy dancing,
Susan
13. Separate Family:
13. Separate: Active couple turn your back on your partner and move away from each other around the set and around as many people as directed by the caller. SEPARATE – 2 + steps, determined by the distance traveled.
13 b. Around 1 or 2 Into The Middle: Move around the number of dancers indicated by the caller and step into the middle of the square. AROUND 1 INTO THE MIDDLE – 8 steps; AROUND 2 INTO THE MIDDLE – 12 steps.
14. Split Two: Designated or active dancers go as a couple between the two dancers in front of you and carryout next call. The other dancers or inactive dancers slide apart to let them through and then slide back together. SPLIT TWO – 2 + the next call.
26. Walk Around The Corner: Dancers face their corners. Walking forward and around each other while keeping right shoulders adjacent, dancers return to their original position, with their backs toward their corner. WALK AROUND THE CORNER – 8 steps
27. See Saw: Each dancer walks forward and around the partner keeping left shoulders adjacent, then steps forward to face the corner. This is not a DOSADO. SEE SAW – 8 steps.
28 a. Square Thru, 1-4: Starting position is any two couples (BG, GB, GG, BB) facing each other; start with right hand walk by and turn one quarter in (toward center of foursome); left hand walk by and turn one quarter in; continue the given number of hands until the last one; last hand walk straight ahead; there is no turn. SQUARE THRU, 1-4 – 4 dancers full around – 10 steps.
This week: Separate to Line, Circle to a Line, Trades – named, Trades - couples
